E! the idea behind osmosis is that you want to have the same concentration on each side of a membrane. On each side of the membrane you have a solution (solute dissolved in a solvent, typically nutrients/ions dissolved in water). Instead of moving molecules or ions across the membrane, the water (solvent) moves instead. As the water moves, it will move to the side of the membrane that has more solutes in it, weakening that side while making the side it came from more concentrated until both sides are even.
