What role did Islam play in energizing Arabian culture?

Didn't we get a lot from the early Islamic culture? A numerical system,advanced astronomy,spoons and forks,constabulary,paved or cobblestone streets,modern sewage? As I understand it,Paris was a pigsty when Alexandria was one of the most advanced cities on earth. And this alll happened in the immediate aftermath of what Europeans called Mohammadenism. True? Opinions?
